Amazon.co.uk Review
Irish folk band Clannad were founded in 1970 and for many years performed on traditional Irish instruments and sang only in Gaelic. In 1984, however, they achieved broader public attention when they were commissioned to write the music for the ITV series
Robin Of Sherwood. By now, they had incorporated rock instruments and synthesisers into their music alongside the pipes and bodhrans. The resulting sound may have upset purists, but it made for extremely effective accompaniment to the series' broody, mystical take on the Sherwood legend. The ambient drones of "Herne" (as in Herne The Hunter, the demi-God of the forest whom Robin reveres), "Battles" and the haunting "Darkmere" were a good deal more crucial to the overall atmosphere of the series than one or two of the acting performances and are eminently listenable in their own right.

CD Description
Clannad started out like many traditional folk bands of Ireland; its early material for Gael-Linn Records could be considered traditional Irish folk, and most of the lyrics were in Irish. However, the band's signing to RCA Records and its 1982 hit "Theme From Harry's Game" catapulted it to the top of the UK pop charts. Most importantly, Clannad was one of the first Irish bands to truly delve into ambient music, an idiom that may be the modern counterpart to the traditional slow air.
This 1984 release finds Clannad at the height ofits career. LEGEND is essentially the soundtrack to the television show, ROBIN OF SHERWOOD, and opens with the theme music, "Robin (The Hooded Man)". Other songs such as "Herne" and "Now is Here" retain the ambient (soaking wet with reverb) sound, though the theme for "Lady Marian" harks back to more traditional harp music. While the '80s synths are dated-sounding, most of the music here represents Irish pop at its finest.
