5.0 out of 5 stars The Church define their sound - lush and wild., 23 Aug 2008
Yes, this was the moment that The Church defined their amazing sound. "Almost with You" built on their early success and made them pop stars in OZ. It is a great song and the follow-up "When You Were Mine" is just as strong and powerful. But for me, the real jewels on this marvellous cd are "An Interlude" with its lush broad landscape guitars, and "You Took". The latter is a an epic with their trademark other-earthly sound documenting love and betrayal. The swirl of voices and guitars at the end of the song are pure genius.
Whilst they would move on to a more mature and consistent sound in years to come, the very fact that this is The Church finding their sound as young spectral pioneers is wonderful in a way that they could never do again.
There is always a lot going for any cd by The Church but this is always a favourite because it signaled their birth as the real thing. Its not their best cd - for me they are getting better and better and everything since 2000 has been incredible - but The Blurred Crusade was better than anything at the time of its release. Good place to start if you havent got "Starfish" already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Church Music!, 1 Sep 2009
By Harvey Randall (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
If I had to choose one track from the 1980s to exemplify what was worth listening to in that unfairly derided musical decade, it would be this album's opener- the utterly brilliant 'Almost With You'. I never once heard it on the radio of course, which only goes to show that the radio is seldom if ever representative of the the best music being made at any time. As far as I'm concerned The Church are the best thing to ever break out of Australia & this, their second album, remains a firm favourite after over 25 years! On first hearing it sounds like the most immediately accessible & conventional rock record this band have issued to date but repeat listenings reveal deft details and subtle sound textures that continue to inspire admiration. The sublime 'Almost With You' was a tough number to follow but they succeeded in doing just that with a range of quite wonderful songs, from the tender 'To Be In Your Eyes' to the wide-scale epic wig-out of 'You Took'. There is not a trace of filler here & it astonishes me that I can still pick out nuances that I hadn't noticed before. That, I guess, is the mark of a true masterpiece.
