Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A good overview of Sting's radio hits and popular album tracks with no major omissions, Fields of Gold also offers three previously unreleased songs. "This Cowboy Song" and "When We Dance" appear on no other album, while "We'll Be Together" is an alternate interpretation. The import version of this collection offers a substantially different and expanded track listing, dropping "Fortress Around Your Heart", "Be Still My Beating Heart", and "Why Should I Cry for You"; and adding "Nothing 'Bout Me", "Mad About You", "Seven Days", "It's Probably Me", "Love is the Seventh Wave", and "Demolition Man". --Gavin McNett

CD Description

Emerging from new wave on the wings of hits like "Roxanne" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me", the Police perfected an appealing synthesis of reggae, pop and freewheeling instrumental flourishes rooted in the power trio conventions of earlier electric blues bands.
Yet for all the elemental tensionAndy Summers and Stewart Copeland brought to each arrangement, Sting's keening tenor and canny ear for melodic hooks propelled the band's popularity. As his writing skills maturedthrough SYNCHRONICITY, Sting's need for artistic control--and a tighter rhythmic focus--necessitated a band in which hewas the unquestioned leader.
FIELDS OF GOLD chronicles the work of a classic pop vocalist who is simply unwilling torest on his laurels--a wide ranging collection of brainy power pop, with two new songs ("When We Dance" and "This Cowboy") acting as stylistic bookends. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis and bassist Daryl Jones add key elements of jazz and soul to such confessional hits as "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" and "Fortress Around Your Heart", while Sting's infatuation with Brazilian music animates the tender "Fragile". As his metaphysical and political muse evolved, Sting's orchestrations grew more ambitious, from the reggaeish strings of "Englishman In New York", through the lush, keyboard-inflected R&B of "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" and the edgy funk of "We'll Be Together". FIELDS OF GOLD is a remarkably classy, consistent set of tunes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Enought For A "Best Of" Album, 2 Jan 2003
By Neal C. Reynolds (Indianapolis, Indiana) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This CD is an excellant overview of Sting's commercial hits, and is sure to please with "When We Dance", "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You", "Fields Of Gold", "If You Love Somebody (Set Them Free)", "All This Time", and so forth.
It does have the weakness, of course, of most "best of" compilations in that it shows only the commercial "top 40" side of a notable artist. Those who think the only good stuff is that which is played on the radio therefore enjoy this and other "best of" collections, and will like this more than any one album.

This is a good sampler of Sting's radio hits, but if you want a deeper understanding of Sting, don't stop here, but also listen to the albums which show off the less commercial side of his talent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Most of the highs, one or two lows..., 29 Jan 2000
By A Customer
All of Sting's big hits from 84 to 94 are in here, from the endlessly parodied 'Englishman in New York' to the anti-Pinochet 'They Dance Alone'. Unfortunately, the final two tracks, 'This Cowboy Song' and 'Demolition Man', whilst being chart hits, lack the sensitivity and musicality of his other work. A remastered version of this album also contains 'Moon over Bourbon Street', 'Why Should I cry for You?' and 'Fragilidad', dispensing with 'Demolition Man'. For my money, this is a better buy than the original, but if you like Sting, you ought to love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album, 3 Jan 2004
By A Customer
This has to be one of the undisputed Greatest Hits Albums of all time. This album has the power to wreak havoc on the emotions from breaking everyone down in a flurry of saddness with "Fields of Gold " then building them up "If you Love Somebody Set them Free".

One of the main reasons that i bought this album was however for sentimental value. Not because i know Sting, but because my father had this album a while ago and we have since stopped talking, but this album reminds me of the better times that we had shared. Perhaps he overplayed it too much, but maybe thats why its stuck in my mind and is perhaps one of my most treasured albums!
