Product Description

CD Description
A year after winning a Grammy Award for best metal album--an award that was the occasion for much mirth in the criticalcommunity--Jethro Tull returned with an album that nobody would ever mistake for metal but nonetheless rocked harder and more authoritatively than anything the group had recorded in years. Although leader/flute guy Ian Anderson sounds rather more Lennonesque than one remembers, guitarist Martin Barre's riffing and slide work recall the band's early '70s heyday, while the new songs (check out "Sparrow on the Schoolyard Wall") manage to split the difference between Tull's English folk and blues roots with alacrity. A keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars A return to form, 15 Jan 2003
By David Socha "fanofalias" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After the electronic years of 'A' through to 'Under Wraps' and the Dire Straits (and some would say 'pants') years of albums like 'Crest of a Knave', Tull began their return to top form with 'Catfish Rising'.

This has the distinctive Tull sound of old, but it also has good songs. And a far higher proportion of good songs than you'll find on say, a modern Deep Purple album - and that's coming from a big fan of Purple!

A personal favourite is 'Rocks on the Road', a song about touring, but also about touring while being a little older than once you were......as usual Ian Anderson doesn't stray too far from subjects he knows or has strong opinions on. Which is fine of course. Another example of a well-worn Tull theme delivered in a great song is 'When Jesus Came to Play', commenting on the familiarity-breeds-contempt aspects of religion.

All in all, this is a fine album and a welcome return to quality after some less than satisfying efforts at times. While it has the same character as older, classic material it is obviously output from a mature band who are not going to be giving Eminem a run for his money on the offensiveness or shock-factor front. Tull don't really have anything new to say, but what they do say, they say well and that's good enough for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant but not brilliant, 27 Oct 2006
By alextorres "musiclover" (Near Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
When artists such as Jethro Tull get to the latter stages of their careers, it must be difficult to produce the "wow!" factor in their music, certainly in the eyes of long-standing fans whose favourite moments may be from a couple of decades previously. However, it does occasionally happen that one of these artists, perhaps inspired by a new producer or some other factor, produces a magical moment that can excite its pre-existing fan-base. "Catfish Rising" is NOT such a moment from Jethro Tull!

To be sure, there is nothing particularly wrong with the album. I have had it for a number of years and always enjoyed listening to it, but it lacks the inspiration of many other Tull albums - which, I'm afraid, is an unforgiving yardstick.

The musicianship throughout is exemplary, as you would expect. Ian Anderson thinks that songs from this era are better crafted than the early material: that may well be so but it doesn't always result in more peasant listening - sometimes a bit of "grit" is needed!

"This is Not Love", the opener, sets the scene for the album, which is fairly pacey and rocky. The best moments are nearly all when Ian's sense of humour shines through - "Sleeping with the Dog" and "When Jesus Came to Play" being worthy of mention - but the most creative and best song by far is the slower, 8-minute long "White Innocence". This has an interesting musical development with an effective keyboard "bridge" and a strong musical arrangement - probably worth getting the CD for this alone.

Overall, pleasant but not brilliant. Worthy of the "Jethro Tull "brand".
