I'm a rocker. I rock out., 7 Feb 2006
One of the more sadly forgotten 80s artists, condensed down into an outing of Love Is A Battlefield every now and then on goldies radio (a fine showing, it must be said, but not the only one on here) and that's about it. However, with a couple of minor exceptions, this album rocks in a similar or harder style from start to finish and is well worth a small outlay. Pat's classical training in opera singing sure comes through on some of these pieces - Promises in the Dark and Fire & Ice being true killers. They all make great numbers to drive, work, work out, or just mosh around your bedroom to, from the opening HeartBreaker (short, to the point, pop-punky and taking no prisoners) charging almost unabated through Promises and Fire & Ice, Anxiety and Battlefield, to All Fired Up, Hell is for Children and Invincible near the end, finishing off with a more chilled out climbdown in the last three tracks (time to grab a drink and replenish some lost sweat without having to do it in silence).Unfortunately, from other reviews and tracklistings i've seen, poor Ms Benatar can't get a completely "right" best-of made, out of several attempts, leaving it up to the fans to mixtape it instead. This is one of the better ones on that evidence, though - only a few troubles. First up, the short "radio edit" type versions of Battlefield and Invincible (and probably others I haven't spotted) with teeth-grindingly bad edits to the intros and solos (as the album has time to spare at under 72 minutes, I suspect licensing issues) - luckily I have the rarer full length ones tucked away to sub them with - and a couple of missing tunes that can be found on other best-ofs, like Hot Child in the City, being subbed by filler such as Ooh Ooh Song (ok, i guess it probably sold really well, but it just doesn't fit with the others and isn't very interesting). But, that's it as far as badness goes, and once it's playing you can easily and happily ignore the quibbles, just letting it spin for the entire length and having a proper bit of wide throttled 80s permed hair rock.
