5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful, masterful, aristocratic playing, 15 Jun 2007
By Mr. Ian A. Macfarlane "almac1975" (Fife, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
These famous performances are absolutely beautiful. Heifetz takes generally rapid tempi but is so much in control technically that he is never rushed, and he never rushes the music. He is particularly skilled in sudden, hushed moments, ravishingly beautiful phrasing and imaginative (sometimes extremely difficult) fingering which lends a different colour to a passage. His bow control is also phenomenal ; nothing is laboured, nothing is starved of tone, nothing is clumsy. He plays all the notes (not everyone does) and they are all in tune. He is faithful to the composers' markings in both works, and though his performances are highly individual, they are in no way eccentric. The orchestral contributions are good (Munch was good Beethoven conductor) and not badly recorded, well enough for the time and well enough certainly for these unmatched performances to be fully appreciated. And this CD is now so ridiculously cheap that it is a notable bargain!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous playing, 22 Oct 2009
By Mr. D. A. Littlewood (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Heifetz Beethoven concerto used to be considered too fast and superficial until the period instrument movement's influence. What Heifetz does is to take Beethoven's marking foer the first movement - Allegro non troppo - seriously. Hence the pace is brisk and the effect dramatic, rather than the over-solemn reverence we sometimes here. Of course, Heifetz's technique is so fabulous that every note is heard and nothing seems rushed. There are other ways of doing the Beethoven but this is first choice for me.
The Mendelsohnn is also a fabulous performance - if you like it gentle and sweet avoid this!
