Being a student of composing for film and tv, I was looking forward to hearing Bernard Herrmann's unadulterated, original music for the great film Taxi Driver. Unfortunately the original release on CD from Arista consists of 10 tracks, the first 5 of which are pointless jazz funk workouts of Hermann's themes by session musos, arranged by Dave Blume. Track 6 is a collage of Travis Bickle soundbites over a pasted together backing track. It's not until you get to track 7 that the original music is heard, conducted by Herrmann. This is the real thing - exquisitely composed and orchestrated, this is film music of the highest calibre, but the total minutes of this actual soundtrack material add up to 9.55! Do yourself a favour and make sure you buy this product brand new. It's only the newer version which has the track listing illustrated on this product page.

Some tracklisting confusion - if you buy the product you get the entire film score plus some wortwhile and intelligent interpretations.

This is how all soundtrack CDs should be offered:

Full film score - no dumbing down or dilution. The film score.

Plus, if any space left on CD, what they've done here, ie interpretations (cover versions) of the music with bits of dialogue (monologue) added - "Diary Of A Taxi Driver" and "God's Lonely Man" are fine by me, if not the purists.

Add in a very well designed poster size inlay with Scorcese essay on score composer Bernard Herrmann, and you've got the kind of soudtrack CD well worth the money.

Can somebody please do the same for Ghost Dog.

The great Bernard Hermann in one of his latest works hits completely the spot giving the perfect mood for the taxi nights, that dreamy feeling that the main character is going thorough. A pleasure to listen, but make sure to listen to it carefully.
