Product Description

CD Description
With his defiant, starkly pronounced vocal flow and terselyinsightful lyrics, Kurtis Blow could almost be called rap'sfirst breakout solo artist. From its initial exhortation to"clap your hands everybody", its implicit call to chant thechorus, and its simple yet undeniably inviting guitar riff and conga drum madness, along with Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" Blow's landmark single "The Breaks" helped introduce this rapidly growing underground style to a larger nation of souls who wanted to dance the night away.
However Kurtis Blow wasn't just 'The Breaks"; KURTIS BLOW, the eponymous album fashioned around the hit, contains track after track of early hip-hop splendour. The introduction "Rappin' Blow(Part 2)" is the perfect showcase for his deceptively simple and engaging rhyming style. Despite Blow's general association with party songs, heady notions aren't ignored, such as"Hard Times", a smoothed-out inspirational jam about overcoming obstacles. Keep an eye out also for "All I Want in ThisWorld", where he actually croons rather ably on perhaps theoriginal rapper's love ode.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kurtis Blow., 3 Dec 2006
This album is as relivant now as it was back in '79. Blow was the first artist to record a full length rap album on a major label and his work on this title is inspirational.
From "Hard Times" (in my opinion one of the best songs on this record) with it's almost addictive wandering bass lines and funky verses to the well known classic "The Breaks" I can safely say that there is not a single song on this album that I don't admire. "Christmas Rappin'" is another classic, smooth, and yet full of festive charm.
I'm certain this album has inspired many greats to fiddle with new and interesting lyrical styles.
If you like Sugarhill Gang this album will be right up your street. Even if you don't like rap that much I'm sure you'll still enjoy this record.

That Kurtis Blow was one of the very first rappers to popularise the genre is not in dispute. Essentially at this time the majority of rap music was first and foremost a fun and party friendly kind of music totally different to the styles and lyrics of today's stars like Eminem. This was Kurtis's first album and features the two tracks that he's still best known for in 'Rappin Blow (Part 2) (AKA 'Christmas Rappin' in it's entire version) and biggest hit 'The Breaks'. These two tracks, though a bit dated, still sound good even today and evoke memories of some seriously good times with me! Sadly, even at the time, the rest of this record was/ is pretty poor. 'Way Out West' is a daft 'wild west' rap song and along with third single 'Throughout Your Years' musically sounds not unlike the previously mentioned hits noe of which make this a good album listen. 'Hard Times' at least changes the tempo a little but is poor in comparison with 'The Breaks' and then Kurtis proves just why he took up rapping in the first place..IE he can't sing! 'All I Want In This World (Is To Find That Girl)' is a dead slow ballad that only goes to show off what a weak and weedy singing voice Blow has. Final original vinyl cut 'Takin' Care Of Business' is a rock rap track written by Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive and Ironhorse fame and is simply awful with a capital A. With this Cd you do at least get two further versions of the hits tagged on at the end but if you've already got those I would avoid this album like the plague!
