These works here are but two of the 30 cantatas Weyse was to write as part of his official role as `Court Composer'. Although they had no liturgical function and were intended for performance after the service had ended, they do show an awareness of J. S. Bach's sacred cantatas in their scale and in the way the varied solo and ensemble movements are framed by large scale choruses.

Although neither is an example of `great music', they are mellifluous, in some senses highly professional works, and brought the composer some esteem in his lifetime. Fugues are common, along with the use of chorales and hymn tunes; the trombones, traditionally used in sacred music long before they entered the concert hall or theatre orchestras, bring a certain gravitas to the proceedings. Although these works are, in the best sense of the word, essentially Biedermeier utterances, the orchestration also shows an awareness of Romantic colouring and the sure hand of a composer who had honed his craft in the theatre; Weyse had a string of singspiels to his name before the cantatas recorded here were composed. The harp in particular is used to good effect.

As you might expect, the Christmas Cantata is more reflective and sweet-toned, while the Easter Cantata reflects the drama of the crucifixion and glory of the resurrection.

The performances and recording quality leave nothing to be desired and the disc provides an attractive example of Danish Golden Age music. An enjoyable release.
