Although it has been recorded by the Bolshoi aswell this recording is the only one which can convince anybody that this opera is a masterpiece. Recorded live at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1997 there is very little noise from the audience. The men are all masters of easy comedy and the fruity tones of the women make the performance desirable. The most memorable tune is found in the 3rd act and is sung by Don Jerome which is to this opera what the march is to "The Love for Three Oranges". Although this opera is very good I would not recomend it to anyone who has never heard an opera by Prokofiev since this one is very different from all his others. It would be better to start with "The Love for Three Oranges" or "The Fiery Angel" which are both much shorter and more approachable. Anyone who is familiar with Prokofiev will enjoy this rejected opera considerbaly.
