Solex is Elisabeth Esselink. Her modus operandi is singer-songwriter-ish, DIY bedroom recording. That description mightlead you to believe she's a tortured American soul with a cheap guitar, a four-track, and enough pot to forget the torture of the country's heartless, consumerist ideals (think Smog, Palace, Lou Barlow, et al.). But Solex is an Amsterdamite living in confident peace, embracing both the digital '90s(samples and loops are aplenty on her debut SOLEX VS. THE HITMEISTER) and the analogue past, creating a personal brand of modern-day pop that reads like a diary manifesto and sounds like homemade house music.
Lyrically, SOLEX VS. THE HITMEISTER is all about the little incidents and vague memories that symbolise life's pathways. "Solex Feels Lucky" rolls along on a nervous trumpet loop and skittering, Burundi-esque drums, as Solex talks of a possible human connection. A noisy analogue din and smoky vibes settle over "Solex In a Slipshod Style" as Solex describes a relationship that doesn't seem to quite meet expectations. The general musical equation is that of Bjork meeting The Magnetic Fields to perform anabstract (and PG-rated) version of the Liz Phair songbook. Yes, it is that good.
