5.0 out of 5 stars Another example of Pletnev's brilliance, 10 Oct 2000
Tchaikovsky's piano concertos are well known and much recorded but few versions are as complete as this, Mikhail Pletnev has complete mastery of the instrument, his tone and colour reveal hitherto hidden depths to these concertos. The one flaw in this set is a small cut in the second concerto but it remains a highly reccomendable version ... Well worth the modest outlay.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, But sadly not perfect!, 27 April 2004
I have heard many versions of Tchaikovsky's famous 1st piano concerto andam pleased to say the one on this recording is one of the best. Pletnev'stone and communication through the music could not be better. Thewonderful theme at the very beginning of the first movement is capturedbeautifully by the accompanying orchestra. Even throughout the rest of thework, without any return of this theme, the players manage to indulge inthe evident romanticism of the 1st Concerto. Tchaikovsky's larger worksoften follow this structure. One great, awe-inspiring theme thatoverwhelms the audience followed by a slight descent into developingpassages. It is all too often a great shame that these long parts of thescore are left as a second-concern to the orchestra who are wonderful atstating themes, and not so wonderful at brining the essence of them intofollowing bars. This, however, does not occur here and the playing in the1st concerto is consistent and stylistic.
Why not five stars? Well, personally, It's the second concerto that letthis recording down for me. The work itself is more refined andtechnically balanced than the first (yet it has less of an immediateimpact upon the listener) and requires utmost and total perfection at thekeyboard. I have heard this done perhaps once in all the recordings I haveheard and have made it a rule to mark all other versions against it. Thisone falls ever so slightly short, I have heard better.
A similar, but now much less obvious problem continues into the thirdconcerto. But it is hardly noticable and the last concerto is generallybrilliantly observed by the musicians and the depth of playing we heard inthe 1st is regurgitated and spewed out in wonderful style. The codaespecially is well perfected and lets this fantastic recording go out witha bang.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good value but a raw performance, 4 Jan 2007
By A. Bolton "A Bolton" (Notts United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Tchaikovsky poured passion and pianistic fireworks into all three of these concerti, Pletnev's fingers are brilliant, but in his quest to show off his superb technique, he tramples all over Tchakovsky's passion and nunances. Such a shame, I wish I could play with a mere fraction of Pletnev's admirable technique, but despite the attraction of the excellent value of this triple concerto set, I would urge prospective buyers to seek out recordings by Gilels, Ashkenazy or Ogden and make up their Tchaikovsky 3 concerto library by buying the recordings individually, you may lose a few £ but you'll have recordings that you will play again and again. Sorry Mr Pletnev, I'm sure you'll have many more successes, but this recording set isn't one of them.
