A conscientious review of this Traviata is in danger of reading like a profit-and-loss account. The pluses are very big and the minuses are on the big side too, so the main thing to get across is that while the sound varies from ok to
dire (3rd act) and one can nitpick at some aspects of the casting and singing I am in no doubt that as a realisation of the whole wonderful
drama seared into music by Verdi this performance is outstanding. To me its deficiencies just pale before its virtues. In the last resort, how do these artists measure up to their theme? They are magnificent but flawed, and when the best is as good as here I personally am not inclined to be Beckmesser. In music like this, in drama like this, it's the big picture that matters and I would sooner have this Traviata than any number of sanitised perfectionist accounts. To get the quibbles out of the way, the sound is nowhere more than average and in Act III a lot less than that. Callas does not have as 'beautiful' a voice as de los Angeles or Schwarzkopf or Sutherland or Caballe or Janowitz or Ameling. Bastianini is a bit run-of-the-mill and di Stefano is more ardent than subtle. All that said, when I ask myself 'Who cares?' I know I don't. The main thrill to me is the feeling of a live performance at la Scala -- burning conviction, conductor and singers who understand music like this with the marrow of their bones, even the participatory audience. And Callas -- this is her at her greatest. She is an actress as well as a singer, and no mean singer either. As always with Verdi, the main roles are taxing not to say stressful, but the impression that remained with me after this Traviata was of the burning beauty and intense pathos of it all. I wonder whether anybody has ever done Violetta's final scene so movingly however well it may have been recorded.
I would have given the set 4 stars except that I know that sound-quality and polish matter more to some music-lovers than to me. And given the price I still feel that the 3 stars are a bit stingy. At this price you can afford to get it and see what you think.

As a moderate fan of Callas - and someone with her Norma, Lucia, Tosca, Turandot, and Aida in my library already - I was seriously disappointed with this set. That is no reflection on Callas, nor on the audience whose clapping is not that intrusive, nor because it is mono (so are the above studio sets), but simply the sound quality overall. This set is simply not a pleasure to listen to at any length. I cannot compare this with her 1958 Lisbon set under Ghione, but be warned - that is live as well.

Callas's La Scala La Traviata ranks with the very best work she has done with this role. Her portrayal ranks as one of the highest standards in singing. Her art in the audio medium takes you to the stage she performed on and gives you a kind of virtual presence that no other soprano can generate.

The sound on this set is not bad at all..you need to get over the liabilities of it, of course, but once you do the very raw power of Callas comes through, in ways studio performances do not. I recommend this as essential to any operatic collection.
