Still the best recordings., 22 Mar 2005
I love this soundtrack,it is superb. I grew up on the songs from this musical and so this has a special place in my heart. It's true that in a couple of places the sound quality muffles a little but remember it was recorded 30 or so years ago. The main point i would like to make is that listening to the movie recordings of these songs for most of my life, and seeing three different theatre productions of this musical in my lifetime, the movie interpretations and singers are by far SUPERIOR to any actor/stage/singer that i have yet witnessed. I have thoroughly enjoyed each time watching this live in a theatre, but the quality of singing on this soundtrack is of the highest calibre and delivered with massive emotion. Watch the 1973 version yourself and witness Carl Anderson as Judas, Ted Neeley as Jesus and Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdelene. Their renditions of these songs still bring a tear to my eye as they are sung with such passion, depth and soul.

Awesome, 28 Aug 2001
This is the definative JC Superstar. The casting is perfect and the talent of the vocalists is unparalelled. Jesus, Judas and Kiafas are particularly good. I recently bought the stage version DVD, although it is excellent, it pales next to this soundtrack. Money well spent!

Super Superstar, 30 Sep 2000
Okay- where do I begin? Well, for a start, this claims to be a remastered version of the soundtrack, though you'd hardly guess upon hearing it, as some points throughout the music sound a little murky- hardly what you'd expect from a remastered edition. But nonetheless, the music still stands out. This version of the score is probably one of the best around- with Andre Previn conducting you are assured some treats! The orchestra sound absolutely amazing, and yet the rock rhythm tracks still stand out. The singers, however, are another story. The best out of the whole lot, as i'm sure everyone will agree, is Yvonne Elliman, who is simply THE Magdalene. Her voice is too wonderful to describe. Dennen and Anderson are next in line, as Pilate and Judas respectively- they have fine voices and act the music as much as they sing it. Ted Neeley, however, is simply far too weak a Jesus to be thoroughly convincing, though as a singer, he can pass it off. Mostel as Herod is the WORST thing on this c.d.- his Herod is high- HIGH- camp, which seriously mars this devine show. I always skip his track. Lloyd Webber improved on his orchestrations for this version, which creates some wonderful effects- especially on "Pilate's Dream". He and Rice also wrote a new song for the film- "Then we are decided", which was only ever used in the movie- a shame, because it creates a new dimension for the characters Caiaphas and Annas. The one thing that's missing from the movie is the reprise of "Everything's alright", which in the movie became this exceptionally beautiful orchestral sequence that lead into "I don't know how to love him"- this is missing from the recording. A real shame! Musically, i'd say that this has to be one of the best versions around. Singer- wise, it has it's ups, but it has more downs, as the chorus' are often a little bit much to listen too- screaching in places, out of tune almost in others. If you had to choose which Superstar to buy, then remember this- this is wonderful orchestrally, and his some excellent singers, but the best version, singer-wise, whith a more talented cast (except for Mary- you can't beat Elliman), is the new 1996 version- it's cast are wonderful, though the orchestra sounds weak when compared to the film version. So I recommend you buy the movie and 1996 version (Steve Balsamo is Amazing as Nazareth! ). Happy listening...
