Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

As a Jewish, London-born composer of Polish descent, Benjamin Frankel observed the Holocaust from a distance, expressing his feelings in the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra In Memory of the Six Million. Written for the Festival of Britain (1951), the work brought Frankel to wide notice. It is inevitably a dark-hued, commemorative work, yet appropriately for a festival celebrating renewal, ends with acceptance and a hope of peace. Ulf Hoelscher plays with searing intensity, strongly arguing that this is music in the lineage of Bloch's Schelomo, anticipating Górecki's Symphony No.3. Frankel's Viola Concerto (1968) is in contrast full of lyrical energy, and while employing serial techniques remains both accessible and enjoyable. Completing the album is the single movement Seranata Concertante for Piano Trio and Orchestra (1960). Inspired by Beethoven's Triple Concerto this fantasia again demonstrates the friendly face of serialism. Werner Andreas Albert and the Queensland Symphony, who have previously recorded all of the composer's symphonic output, ideally capture Frankel's nuances with a clear, accurately focused recording. --Gary S Dalkin
