Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Here are two sides of Bart&ocute;k --the composer donning nationalist costume with works based on traditional dances and songs of Hungary, Romania and Transylvania--and one of his most scorching orchestral showpieces, the ballet score, The Miraculous Mandarin. In the songs and dances Bart&ocute;k turns folk music into high art without losing any of its authentic tang, ranging from the rumbustious (the last of the Dances of Transylvania) to the poignant (the "Melody" from the Hungarian Sketches). And in the complete recording of Mandarin (there's also a suite, which is often recorded, though if you opt for this you miss some of the best bits), Iv´n Fischer and his orchestra take you on a rollercoaster ride through the thrills and spills of one of Bart&ocute;k's greatest works, a compelling tale of seduction, squalor, violence and death, depicted here in unflinching Technicolor. --Harriet Smith

5.0 out of 5 stars A hair-raising "Mandarin", 4 Jun 2008
I bought this almost by accident and it is one of my favourite discs of 20th Century music. The Folk dances are transformed by Bartok's art into something that is effortlessly enjoyable while also being profound and sophisticated. While never losing the authentic sound of the original folk melodies, Bartok utterly transforms them into haunting and wonderfully personal utterances. Even the tiny fragmentary Roumanian Dances will stay with you for hours after hearing them. (Especially?)
On the other hand, here is a performance of the full score of the hugely disturbing "Miraculous Mandarin" that is completely "cut loose" in its response to the fantastic orchestration of the most lurid scenario imaginable. It ought to be unbearable but Fischer's Budapest forces are so "inside" this marvellous music that they make its violence totally compelling and generate shimmering sonorities of extraordinary beauty. You feel that the conductor and orchestra fully identify with every aspect of Bartok's musical language. The word "idiomatic" hardly begins to describe it. The Phillips engineers manage to capture all this in an atmospheric but crystalline acoustic.
You certainly want the full score of the Mandarin, rather than the suite, and this version is head and shoulders above any other that I have heard in both performance and recording. I cannot imagine performances that could possibly better those on this incredible disc.

Just to add that BBC Radio 3's CD Review has just selected this as the best available recording as of November 2008.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Mandarin, 6 Feb 2009
By Tancredi (Manchester) - See all my reviews
This simply the best performance I have heard of one of Bartoks greatest works. The technical difficulties of the piece are never evident, and the benefit of having the complete work, albeit less than 10 minutes longer than the "Suite" is incalculable, the closing minutes are key to what has gone before. The recording is also clear and well balanced

I am not so sure about the fill ups. Yes Bartok's many straight folk based dances are interesting and enjoyable but this is a bit too much of a good thing if you listen to the CD from begining to end non stop. I would have preferred the Dance Suite instead of a couple of these suites

But if you want the ballet, and it should be in every music lovers collection, this the version to go for
