Product Description
Description
CHEAP THRILLS serves as a 40-minute introduction to the varied world of Frank Zappa's vast catalogue. Drawn from a dozen different releases, most of the tracks are live. However, Zappa used the stage the way other artists use the studio (and the way he used the studio as well)--as a platform for experimentation. He recorded nearly all of his performances and indeed, many of them became cornerstones of assorted albums, when not constituting an album in its entirety. Long before many other acts were even aware of the process, Zappa wasrefining his approach to live multi-track recording.
"Hot Plate Heaven At the Green Hotel" (from the album BROADWAY THE HARD WAY) is one of several fine guitar workouts included here. "Zomby Woof" is a fine testament to both his skills as a bandleader and his ear for hiring impressive players. The earliest song included in this set is "Cheap Thrills" from the 1968 release CRUISING WITH RUBEN & THE JETS. The latest song here is culled from his final tour in the late eighties.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb value introduction into the world that is FZ, 2 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This release is jam packed with Frank Zappa classics such as "Catholic Girls" and "You are what you is". Fifty minutes of music comprising some of the greatest music ever written and THE best lyrics. A bundle of laughs and an inspiration for us all to dive further in to the vast vault of Frank Zappa's repertoire. For such a small fee you can have a sample of one of the most sadly missed musicians ever to have walked this earth

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a very good introduction, 24 Dec 2005
By coca-ebola (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Like the recent Ryko label "Best Of" it overemphasizes Frank's "funny"/commercial side and doesn't indicate the breadth and depth of his music. The relatively brief running time and the inclusion of spoken word link tracks are frustrating, as are "secret word" versions of "Bobby Brown" and "Joe's Garage" whose improvised lyric changes and laughs will bewilder any newcomer unaware of this aspect of Zappa's performance art. (The companion volume, SON OF CHEEP THRILLS is much better)

4.0 out of 5 stars A thrilling intro., 11 Aug 2003
By A Customer
If you are not familiar with Zappa's later style, you may find the in-yer-face lyrics of 'Catholic Girls' and 'Bobby Brown' a bit much. However the rest of the album is quite 'safe'. The Mudshark interview is laughably deranged and the Captain Beefheart cameo on 'Torture never stops' adds a bluesy touch to things. Then there's the doo-wop of the title track and a nice little instrumental featuring Steve Vai.
For me though, the finest moment is the seque from 'Joes Garage' into the funky rendition of 'My guitar...' - Guess you only get one chance in life to play a song that goes like....
