Amazon.co.uk Review
It seems tough that while Mozart's Masses (and his Requiem in particular) have found a real niche, Haydn's remain largely the preserve of specialists. Certainly in terms of musical worth they are neck and neck and the chances are that if you like Mozart's, you will find much to enjoy here. In the Harmoniemesse, written right at the end of Haydn's career, there is no shortage of drama ("Et resurrexit", "Dona nobis"), spellbinding beauty ("Kyrie", "Et incarnatus") or exhilaration ("Gloria", opening of the "Credo") and Richard Hickox directs a performance which balances grandeur with vigour, fine detail with all- embracing momentum, his period-instrument band and singers rising proudly to the occasion. After such an epic work the early Salve regina requires a mental change of gear, but it has its own restrained beauty, well conveyed by the plangent tones of Nancy Argenta (sample the last track, "O clemens, o pia"). The recorded sound is up to the standard of the performances. Wait till the neighbours are out, pump up the volume and see if you can remain unmoved. --Harriet Smith
