Product Description

CD Description
Madder Rose's debut is a delightful amalgam of driving beats, searing guitars, and sweet vocals. The primary writer is guitarist Billy CotT, who writes perfectly for the sympathetic tones of his instruments and Mary Lorson's singing. The group excels at moody and atmospheric balladry, as on "While Away" and "Pocket Fulla Medicine". Madder Rose is equally adept at more urban rhythms, both laid-back ("Swim") and hopped-up ("Sugarsweet"). The group has roots in both the decay celebrated by the Velvet Underground and X, and in the concise folk rock song forms made popular by the Byrds. This is a strong set of well-written songs, with arrangements and playing to match. This and the group's follow-up, PANIC ON, are a fine pair, and feature the same sound quality and personnel on both.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good debut album from 1993., 5 Feb 2003

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Madder Rose seem to have been lost in 1990's history, in the era between grunge & britpop- despite the fact this album was feted by the music press.

Madder Rose's sound was somewhere between Birdbrain/Let Me Come Over- Buffalo Tom, Opal/Mazzy Star & the classic Velvet Underground sound. This album is mostly written by Billy Cote (the Lou of the band, it seems) & frequently hits its target of melodic guitar pop with rough edges. Vocalist Mary Lorson is a fine front-person- though her own songs (20 Foot Red, Altar Boy) are much less assured than Cote's songs (though Lorson would write some great songs on the following Panic-On album & develop to the excellent material released by Saint Low).

Debut single Madder Rose is overhauled as minor-hit indie single Swim- verging on indie-rap- as does Sugarsweet. No indie-guitar restrictions here. The more maudlin ballads are amongst the most enjoyable tracks here- While Away, Lights Go Down & Bring it Down (which builds up to the epic territory found on Ride's early work like Close My Eyes & Dreams Burn Down). There's also joyful jangly-guitar pop in the shape of Beautiful John & (Living a) Daydream; the album does peter out a little before the end.

Bring it Down is an album well worth investigating, along with The Grifters' Full Blown Possession & Belly's King, it remains a potent reminder of how good US rock music was in the 90s. It's also not that far away from the alt-country mode- such as The Walkabouts, Eleventh Dream Day/Hazeldine & Knife in the Water. The follow-up Panic On (1994) would be even better, offering perfections such as Car Song , Ultra Anxiety (Teenage Style) & Almost Lost My Mind...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very, very excellent, 6 Jan 2009

I've just got my mits on this album after years of separation - it still stands up. Much, much better than hello june fool. I love the play off between the singer's fabulous gentle voice and the big sound system guitars and drums behind. It's almost meditative - feels like it's about the incidental moments of life. Maybe that's why it doesn't wear out very easily. And practically every track on the album is good.
