Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It only took one song from a David Lynch film (Wild At Heart) to launch a coiffed Canadian ex-boxer on the international stage but, as this anthology of songs culled from his first three albums shows, Wicked Game was far from a fluke. A voice seemingly cloned from Roy Orbison's very own DNA--coupled with the kind of looks that go straight to a woman's knees--meant that Chris Isaak didn't need to be a great songwriter. And yet only one of these haunting hymns to heartbreak (The Yardbirds' classic "Heart Full Of Soul") wasn't written by Isaak. So what does this teach us? Merely that: (a) God isn't exactly fair in his distribution of qualities; and (b) don't believe those nay-sayers who claim that all the best tunes have been taken up. "Lie To Me", "Blue Hotel" and, of course, that awesome theme to Wild At Heart are melancholy masterpieces of their genre. --Peter Paphides

5.0 out of 5 stars An absoloute gem of an album, 27 Mar 2005
By Techie Glenn (Leicestershire, England) - See all my reviews
Wicked Game is a fantastic album. Beautiful lyrics, meloncholly guitars and Isaaks extraordinary voice all combine to make this album something quite special.

The collection of songs in this album feel perfect together and nothing felt intrusive as can so often happen, though 'voodoo' does come close to breaking the flow of the album, not because it is bad by any stretch of the imagination but just because it feels quite different. despite this one minor anomoly it still manages to sit reasonably well in the album.

Instrumentaly this album also holds it own extremely well. The emotionally charged guitars of Chris Isaak and James Clavin Wilsey are played with subtlety and precision and their distinctive sound carries through the entire album making all the tracks feel like they belong together. This is to the extent that i would have a hard time hearing these songs in any other context than that of this album.

I prefer to ignore the comparisons to the legendary Roy Orbison just because Isaak's (and indeed his band's) achievments on this album are so impressive, though it is obvious why they are made. Certainly this is more than an attempt at recreating an Orbison sound.

Credit should also be given to the producer (Erik Jacobsen) for a sensitively handled recording that is well produced and crystal clear whilst thankfully stopping short of being overdone, a trap that can so easily be fallen into.

This album deserves a place in any music lovers cd collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wicked Game, 24 Feb 2007

This is a great place to start if you're new to Chris Isaak's work. It has a good selection of the better tracks from his first few albums and gives you a nice taster of what his music is like, IE chilled out, very cool and perfectly nostalgic. His later albums are probably as good as the earlier stuff represented here, and if you like this, you'll probably like what he's subsequently brought out. You can often pick this up at a good price so it's well worth giving it a go, you shouldn't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE KING OF ROMANTIC BALLADIERS, 21 Jul 2001
By A Customer
I have listened to all of Isaac's music and this to me is his definitive work. Every song on this CD sends you into some kind of emotion trip that makes you think about everyone you've ever met and lost, yet in finding the music you find the answers in the emotions it evokes in you. Wicked Game was the love theme for the David Lynch film 'Wild At Heart' and if slow, powerful, heartbreaking music and lyrics are your thing you will find it here especially in 'wicked game' , nothings changed, blue spanish sky, and funeral in the rain. The best thing about this album which sets it apart from the rest is the consistency of the music , all the songs with exception to the nauseating 'Voodoo' have great rhythm and depth , executed by one of the most soulful, talented pitch singers in the music industry. Isaac should team up with Sarah Maclachlan who , musically is his soulmate. If you like this CD the closest similarity would be 'forever blue'. Isaac only had 2 hits in the UK from Wicked Game ( Wicked Game )( Blue Hotel ) if born in the 50s he would have achieved icon status on the same level as orbison, Wicked Game contains some of the most Beautiful lyrics, Music ever produced ( Thanks also to Erik Jakobsen's haunting guitar) and is a must for any hardcore romantic with class that kicks ass.
