"Season's End" is a fine start to Marillion's work with Steve Hogarth. There seems to have been a chemistry with the new lead singer from the beginning, the vocals and instruments working together as one. This album has an impressive clarity of vision.

There are some Marillion classics on here, such as "Easter" and "The Space", which feature on their live album "Made Again". Most of the other tracks are great as well, although I'm less keen on "Hooks in You", as it doesn't quite fit with the feel of the rest of the album. Also, "Uninvited Guest", a decent enough song, is a bit by-the-numbers for a Marillion single.

However, there are some lesser known gems on here. The title track is sad and beautiful, as is "Holloway Girl". "After Me" provides a nice change of pace, although the intro sounds a bit too similar to the intro to "Easter" for my liking (No biggie).

I would say this is one of Marillion's top 3 albums, although many other fans might disagree. It is certainly a good place to start with Marillion if you're new to them. It showcases that special combination of accessibility and emotional depth which is synonymous with the name. I would personally like to see a return to this kind of feel for the band, but as any fan knows, they've left their prog rock phase well behind. We can still treasure it though. This is a purchase well worth making for anyone who appreciates rock music with depth and substance.

Many Marillion fans still have a lukewarm attitude to this album, Steve Hogarth's first outing on lead vocals. However I look back and regard it as one of my favourite albums by the band. The title-track is an exceptional and moving song about the environment. Hooks in You is a fairly conventional rock and roll song.

When Fish departed ... Marillion died for me. Then a year after this album was released a colleague virtually forced me to listen to a copy and I was blown away by King Of Sunset Town. Now it is not just my favourite Marillion track but one of my all time favourite songs. It rises in an anthemic crescendo not too disimilar to All About Eve's Road To My Soul (another of my faves). I was wrong, there is life after Fish and perhaps I have to concede that Steve Hogarths lyrical range is less constricting and offers more scope to the band than the highly distinctive sound Fish had.
