5.0 out of 5 stars birthing something new, 15 Jul 2004
By Bernard Davis "Bernard Davis" (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This disc contains outstanding performances of two pivotal works by John Adams.

In Shaker Loops which was created between 1978 and 1983 we find Adams using the techniques of minimalism, but he is already stretching them to their limits as he seeks to hold a vivid lyricism and strong dynamics within them.

In the Violin Concerto of 1993 Adams creates a new synthesis of musical means: of baroque, classical, romantic, early modern and post modern forms and techniques. The overall effect is close to that of music the early 20th century, but it also sounds completely up to date. With the almost continous musical line for the violin that runs through the work their are parallels with Szymanowski's First Violin Concerto. In the second movement, an ethereal updating of the slow dance chaconne form echoes of a warmer version of Avro Parts tinntabulation style are summoned up.

I have found this to be a rewarding disc that repays each return visit to it. There is always something new to appreciate. This is due both to the richness of Adams music and the quality of the performance. This is neither easy listening or difficult listening, it is an invitation to a musical world of considerable substance and imagination. In short here are two gems of modern composition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Violin Concerto for The Virtual Age, 14 May 2004
What kind of concerto would Bach have written, had he seen humanity during the 1990s ?

Probably somthing similar to John Adams sublime masterpiece which seem to capture the Zeitgeist and homour of our time.

This recording brings together America's best composer, Japan's best conductor and the worlds best violinist...so just listen.
