This is not music that I find I can listen to actively. There doesn't seem to be enough going on. However, it makes excellent background music for working - and thinking - to.

In general, the performance is very quiet, played in a deliberately understated manner, but there are times when the deepest notes make the entire body vibrate.

The pieces range from the "conventional" to the off-beat: the most interesting being the "Predication aux oiseaux" (something about birds, I believe), where Saint-Saens has managed to capture the feel of birdsong. Generally, though, there's a sort of amorphous feel to the entire set, as though the pieces have been removed from whatever context they were originally created for. Whether this is the case or not, this gives the collection the feel of the sort of "ambient classics" collections that seem to be flooding the market at the moment. As for me, I prefer a suite, or symphony, or whatever, in all its true glory - and these don't hang together well enough to make it for me. But, as I say, as background music this collection is admirable. Maybe you will have a different reaction. Well worth trying out to see what it's all about.
