Rameau is best remembered these days as an opera composer,. although he was actually in the employ of the church for over quarter of. a century. And, despite their sacred texts, these motets are in essence. Ramellian operas-in-miniature. None of his sense of dramatic timing, his. remarkable ear for instrumental colour (as personal and immediately. recognisable as that of Berlioz or Debussy) or his zest for lively. choruses is dimmed. In fact, if you want a single-disc taster of what's. he's about, this is as good a starting point as any. William Christie. has gathered together a group of the leading lights of the younger. generation of baroque singers to great effect. And his Arts Florissants. have long been at the top of the pile as far as the French baroque is. concerned. The recorded sound is unobtrusively good, setting the singers. in exactly the right perspective.
