4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to Mastercuts., 23 Jun 2008
'Welcome to Mastercuts'. With those words, written by Ian Dewhirst in 1991, the first ever title bearing the name 'Classic Mastercuts' was issued, with the promise of "no filler" and "no substandard" material. This was the start of a series that had been conceived to explore black musical forms which might otherwise have been ignored by the musical mainstream, and to do so in a way which sought to offer the best possible selction on each issue. This care for quality was also evident in the fact that Beechwood Music Ltd ensured that each title in the series was always issued as a single cd and double vinyl - and this at a time when many inside and outside the music industry had declared the vinyl medium dead.

This last point is ironic given that many of the 'Mastercuts' issues were designed to specifically feature 12" versions of the chosen tracks, a knowing nod to the DJ influenced culture which had informed the experiences of the series originator Ian Dewhirst. And it would be this same DJ culture, sustained by and through new musical forms, which would lead to the so called 'vinyl renaissance' some years later.

But I digress.

This being the first issue, it offers a broad choice of records which are clearly staples from within the tradition of black dance music. On this occasion, Dewhirst chose each version as it was felt to be either the 12" version (many of which had not been previously issued on cd) or the best available mix produced, and here again the quality shines through with Larry Levan, Shep Pettibone, Mark Berry and John 'Jellybean' Benitz being amongst the featured 'remixers'.

The influence of the DJ is also felt in the particular type of mix that is presented, each tends to be a 'stripped down' version of the original track, with a greater emphasis on the percussive elements of the song. And the results are often stunning, particularly with Levan's remix of Gwen Guthrie's 'Seventh Heaven' and Pettibone's remix of D-Train's 'You're the One for Me'.

If there is a criticism to be made it would relate to the fact that whilst many of the mixes featured are impressive, they were clearly designed to be utillised as part of a DJ set, with the extended instrumental breaks, intro's and outro's, and this particular presentation may not work equally well in a domestic setting.

But that aside there is no doubting that this was a seminal release and the 'Mastercuts' series was very quickly established as setting the standard for serious music compilations. Whilst the original series is no longer in production, and Beechwood Music Ltd has expired, it is still possible to buy many of the 'Mastercuts' releases, and I would heartily recommend them to you as a potential buyer.
