Amazon.co.uk Review
Although not on home ground (it was recorded in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA) this 1988 live album is an ideal introduction to the most energetic and virtuosic of Scotland's folk bands. Much of the credit must go to the wizardly accordion playing of Phil Cunningham, whose machine gun-like speed makes Silly Wizard's delivery of dance tunes some of the most exciting on record. He's perfectly matched by the rest of band, though, so just when you think they can't possibly go any faster they crank up the pace another notch: fingers fly, feet tap and hands clap with audible delight. But the band can also slow the pace right down; their renditions of traditional and newly composed folksongs are genuinely moving (Andy Stewart's affecting ballad "The Blackbird"--originally from the studio album Wild and Beautiful--is the standout track here). An hour-long display of inspirational music-making, the songs and vivacious dances on this album are all performed in the best possible circumstances: in front of an appreciative live audience. --Mark Walker
