Product Description

From Amazon.com

The Bothy Band, along with their contemporaries De Dannan and Planxty, helped define that oxymoronic beast, the modern traditional Irish band. The Best of the Bothy Band, which was released in 1983, four years after the band split up, is a superb introduction to their blend of tradition and innovation that still inspires Celtic musicians. From ancient ballads, sung by siblings Micheal O'Dhomhnaill and Triona ni Dhomhnaill, to driving sets of dance tunes, played by uilleann piper Paddy Keenan, flutist Matt Molloy, and fiddler Tommy Peoples (and later Kevin Burke), the Bothies could do it all. The rhythmic center of the band was Donal Lunny, who provided the heartbeat on bodhran, bouzouki, and guitar. The Bothy Band has been incorrectly described as playing with the intensity of a rock band. Just listen to the a cappella track "Fionnghuala" and you will hear a band that drank deeply from a more primal musical well. --Michael Simmons

5.0 out of 5 stars long expected comes at last, 17 Oct 2009
By Gille Liath (Lancashire) - See all my reviews
At last! The Bothy Band on CD. If you like Irish music, get it, get it, get it!

The Bothies are the Led Zeppelin of Irish music: simply the best musicians, each one a master, together at the peak of their powers. They were the cream of the last generation who learned the music in its old, traditional context, and gave it a burst of energy which still carries it on today.

It's fairly well chosen - no best-of can please everybody - but where's the Kesh Jig set? The single most influential piece of traditional music ever recorded, omitted. Bizarre; still, it appears on plenty of other compilations.

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL THE BEST - THE REAL DEAL!, 28 April 2009
By J. Culbert "Sky Bird" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Best of the Bothy Band is a true classic which should be in everybodys CD collection, not just Celtic Trad afficionados!

The 'Bothies' came together - made some real magic - and disbanded in the late 70's but their famed musicianship, dedication, and powerful synergy when playing together remains unmatched.

Though young - each member of the band was hugely talented, and totally proficient on their own particular instruments. All went on to to further international success - and are widely popular to this day.

Matt Molloy was the flautist, and Paddy Glackin, Tommy Peoples and Kevin Burke each played a mean fiddle over the duration. Triona Ni Dhomhnaill played keyboard and vocals, Paddy Keenan played the pipes, and the man who was to become one of the cornerstones of Trad today - Donal Lunny played bazouki!

And working all these disparate components together was the immensely talented and dedicated Micheal O'Domhnaill, who according to the lore, was the wind beneath the sails of this spectacularly coloured, musical flying ship.

Micheal also played guitar accompaniment, but most importantly - he was a hugely gifted and compelling vocalist. Here he sings a beautiful rendition of Casadh An T'Sugain, and brings an unparallelled eloquence and sensitivity to the classic ballad - the Death of Queen Jane.

This CD is still as amazing and vital and potent now, as it was back in the day. It still thrills the senses with its powerful life enhancing rhythms, and sheer joie de vivre. Try listening to it with a supper tray on your lap...no, just not possible. No you gotta get up and mooove!
