So much classic Ani in one album!, 4 Dec 2003
One album, two discs, hours of immensely quotable Ani. What's not to like? For anyone new to the Difranco experience, I'd recommend you try either her self-titled debut first (for eloquent, ballsy, politically-aware girl n' guitar folk), or 'Dilate' (for a darker, more emotionally-tortured journey). Anyone familiar with Ani's music will doubtless know, love and already have most/all of the songs on the tracklisting above. So why get this? Maybe for inspired reworkings of old classics ('Every State Line'). Maybe for the sheer energy and exuberance of Ani onstage, sharing her music with her fans ('In Or Out'). Maybe for the laugh-out-loud-funny between-tracks banter (the chalk outlines of bodies before 'Out of Habit', the Anne Frank story after 'Overlap'). There's so much here... just buy it!

A present that I played again and again, 6 Oct 2000
By A Customer
My brother sent this to me from Canada, with a note saying "try this". He knew I liked Bob Dylan, and he'd just seen Ani Difranco supporting Dylan in the US. She was a bit too feminist for his tastes ("I just went to the bar during her set") but thought I'd like it. He's sent me some weird stuff before, but this album hooked me from the first time I played it. The guitar is sometimes folky, sometimes wistful; then angry. The lyrics are bittersweet, a bit reminiscent of the style of Jagged Little Pill, they get under your skin and you find yourself thinking how angry, how hurt, how happy she must have felt when she wrote that. "Gravel" and "Willing to fight" just make me want to keep playing the tracks over and over to feel the emotion. Her singing is at its best when she soars, hums, her waif-voice telling of all the things she used to do and say. But she's got an evil laugh too, and wants you to fight with her. Unlike many live albums, the talk between tracks isn't at all intrusive: you really feel you are there listening to Ani even though you've never seen her. You can hear the banter between the band members, and there's a great story about being on tour in strange places. I love this album. Yes, its about feminism, power, but there's love in it too. It's brilliant. Its folk, punk, rock. Hear it once and you'll be playing it again and again.

ani the queen of folk, 23 May 2004
Folk music is all about live. And ani proves this with this amazing album: not only does this prove her genius both vocally and on the guitar, it also proves how much she loves being live and interacting with the audience. Her bassist and drumer, Sara and Andy, are also superb. And also, the CD comes with the cutest photo album, full of pictures of ani with the band and people from righteous babe, her own record company. Just buy it OK, you WON'T regret it
