An outstandingly well-played performance of 18th century salon music on original instruments, now 17 years old, but sounds like yesterday. The French horns are superb, as is the flautist. Although the music is resolutely German, in the style of Telemann, it also has something of the variety and inventiveness of Rameau's incidental music for the theatre, in particular the alla breve from S.235, the andante e staccato from S.215. The quirky Pastorell from S.211 is the equal of anything Rameau could contrive in this genre. The andante of S.232, and the andante e staccato of S.208 (apparently written in Venice) sound like additional movements to Vivaldi's "Summer", without being in any way inferior or derivative.
