I bought this box set just after it came out, based on a review at the time. The use of period instruments attracted me, as did the reported quality of the recording. This is an oustanding collection of Beethoven's five piano concertos. The recording breathes with space and achieves pin point clarity. Lubin's playing is superb. He captures each concerto perfectly on pianos which reflect the time when each was composed. The difference is telling, especially with the grand scale of the 5th and the then recent development of the piano that we know today.

Alas, my copy was stolen a few years later and I was forced to replace it with a Teldec recording of Schiff and Haitnik. Itself a marvel of performance and recording quality. However, there was always something missing and I couldn't figure out what it was. I came across another copy of Lubin's recording and understood immediately that I needed to have it.

There is a sense of scale and history on this recording. An authenticity. A depth. A feeling of effortless perfection all wrapped in a recording of crystal clarity.

If you prefer the sound of a modern concert piano 'hammering' out Beethoven, this isn't the disc for you. If you want to listen to Beethoven like he intended, this is perfection.
