5.0 out of 5 stars Probably his best..?, 31 Oct 2001
By M. R. Smith "rodwsmith" (côte d'azur) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Seeing these two pieces live is an experience any lover of music should try to do - the force of an orchestra is rarely as apparent as it is when "Musique à Grande Vitesse" comes to its climax. But, probably for reasons of staging, they're not often performed. This recording is a good alternative. After the delicacy and beauty of Kathryn Stott's virtuoso performance of the Piano music, comes MGV. A staggering work - almost like Nyman is a child let loose in a sweet-shop, he utilises everything. Just when you think it can no longer acquire any more 'vitesse' or 'grandeness', it does, and it does again. I like just about everything from Vivaldi to The Prodigy, but little as much as this. Even the sleeve-notes are interestingly explicative, helpful and easily read! One day people will see through 'minimalism's new clothes' and realise that melody is nothing to be ashamed of...

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 19 Feb 2002
By Mr. A. Pomeroy (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It's a disc of two halves (unless you bought it when it came out, in which case it came with a promotional CD of work by other Argo artists) - the first half is an orchestral reworking of Nyman's music for 'The Piano', which was riding high in the classical charts at the time, and the second half is an original composition called 'MGV - Musique a Grand Vitesse', or 'high-speed music'. Which is an apt description, as it belts along at a fair old lick, like a classical equivalent of techno music. Underscored with an insistent dah-DAH-dah-DAH pulse it builds up, layer after layer, occasionally breaking down and building up into new forms before ending with what appears to be acoustic techno. It's on a larger scale than Nyman's usual work and is enormous fun, too; it's hard not to smile at the insane energy it displays.
In comparison the music from The Piano is much gentler and more meditative, and it would be best to listen to it afterwards in order to relax.

5.0 out of 5 stars MGV is absolutely fantastic, 19 Dec 1999
To me a very unusual thing to like! I usually enjoy good old bold rock music or classical, classical music. But the way this piece builds up to the last region is superb. The 5th region being a real up beat, up lifting piece of music, guaranteed to get you out of any depression. I've found myself putting on the 5th region first and then I play the other 4 regions having the 5th region as a coda. Sorry Michael but thats they way I love this piece. More please!!! ..
