4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Concertos from an Idiosyncratic Voice, 6 Aug 2006
By Sordel (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I've had this disc of concertos by me for around ten years, and it still gets regular play due to the uniqueness of its musical character. Schoenfield is a composer who seems to follow in the mainstream American style but adds more prominent elements of the Yiddish folk tradition in addition to an (at times) cloying sentimentality.

The sentimentality is most in evidence on "Vaudeville", a peculiar concerto for piccolo trumpet which is a self-contained little time machine of a piece that evokes perhaps too effectively the theatre tradition that gives it its name. More muscular and inventive is "Klezmer Rondos", a concerted piece for flute which ingeniously explores its unusual scoring (for Klezmer band, piano and strings).

For me, the major piece here is the piano concerto, "Four Parables" which is more weighty, virtuosic piece reminiscent of Aaron Copland. Although it's the least distinctive of these three unusual works, it retains the individual voice of a composer whose cultural inflections make him a rewarding byway off the main drag of contemporary classical music.
