Amazon.co.uk Review

A celebrated jazz clarinettist in the 1950s, Tony Scott started collaborating with Japanese artists on a trip he made to the country in 1959; he returned in 1964 to teach classes in American Jazz, and ended up collaborating with koto-ist Shinichi Yuize and shakuhachi flute player Hozan Yamamoto on a dozen improvised collaborations. Based on the Zen concept of Beginner's Mind, a state of openness that leads to exploration, the Scott-led pieces pre-date the more modern concept of 'ambient' by a good couple of decades--but, as music descended from temples and designed to ease the mind to a state of higher consciousness, it follows many of the same directives. The gentle clarinet is complemented by the flute, with the koto--a 13-stringed zither--providing a comfortable contrast, though all three musicians appear on only a single track, the opening "Is Not All One?". --Randy Silver

CD Description

In the late 1950s, jazz clarinetist Tony Scott traveled through Asia, settling for five years in Japan to play and teach. While his music influenced the Japanese musicians and students he encountered, the music and ambience of Japan made an even deeper impression on him. He began to use his clarinet to imitate the sounds of nature, and started a lifelong investigation into Buddhism and other Eastern philosophies.
The first tangible result of this exploration is the 1964 release MUSIC FOR ZEN MEDITATION, arguably the first "new age" recording. This is very simple, uncluttered music; the minimal melodic tension draws the listener into the present moment. Scott's clarinet blends beautifully with bamboo flute and Japanese zither, creating a sound both heady and earthy, the perfect embodiment of the Zen philosophy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally absorbing in it's simplicity., 16 Dec 2003
By Steve (essex) - See all my reviews
There is not much to add to the comments of other reviewers. I bought this CD from Amazon as it was a cheapie, and because the reviews indicated it was similar to some other music I've been listening to recently. The investment was definitely worthwhile. The CD contains some of the most gentle, simply structured music I have ever heard, but on the 2nd or 3rd play reveals itself as also being incredibly complex (OK, I know that doesn't make too much sense, but stick with me)If you want music for background, to really listen to, be moved by or to take you to any other place in your imagination, this CD fits the bill. Music for deep contemplation or for letting go. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent ..., 9 Sep 2003

Obviously music is personal, but this cd is a wonderful refreshing
change to all the new age garbage that is produced to cater for western ears. It is bare roots meditation music for the serious practitioner. I find myself experiencing / accessing deeper levels of meditive trance when listening to this recording.
Try listening to it in open, less freqented places, woods/ moorland etc; HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. DON. X
