Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Roland Kirk was perhaps foremost a tenor sax player, but one should add to that flute, stritch and manzello, and one should also add that often he would play them all at once! So even before encountering his music one can marvel at just how he managed that? How did he breathe, control the instruments, how did he get them into his mouth? Then when the suitably intrigued listener finally does hear the music the marvel is multiplied a hundred-fold: this two-in-one album is one of the most exciting and stunning that you'll hear. Kirk mixes bop, funk, R&B, avant-garde and genres yet to be named into a soup of sound which avoids being the unruly mess one might expect and instead is truly enthralling. And for those who may be put off by the avant-garde, rest assured that Kirk had the gift of being both cutting-edge and solidly accessible. Taken separately Rip, Rig and Panic and Now Please Don't You Cry Beautiful Edith are desirable purchases, but now together on a single CD, they are truly essential. --Phil Brett

CD Description
If you're looking for a one-disc, non-compilation introduction to the genius of multi-instrumentalist Roland Kirk (he added the Rahsaan in 1969), look no further. Combining two classic albums from 1965 and 1967, this disc captures Kirk at two of his highest creative peaks. Backed by the all-star trio of pianist Jaki Byard, bassist Richard Davis, and drummerElvin Jones, Kirk graces RIP RIG AND PANIC with some of hiswildest and most free playing. Standout performances include the title track, "Slippery Hippery Flippery", the opening "No Tonic Pres", and the more subdued and traditional "From Bechet, Fats and Byas". NOW PLEASE DON'T YOU CRY BEAUTIFUL EDITH, Kirk's only recording for the legendary Verve label, is a considerably calmer affair but is no less wide-ranging, as it swings effortlessly from a gentle cover of Bacharach-David's "Alfie", to the impressionistic title track, to the flat-out rock & roll of "Fallout".

(REAL NAME)
Many people focus on the fact that Rashaan Roland Kirk played many instruments and often all at the same time. Yeah, that IS pretty amazing, but the really amazing thing is that despite this tomfoolery the man could produce some of the most beautiful, haunting, soulful, funky, explosive music I have ever heard.

This is a great album - in so many ways, great music, great lineup (Elvin Jones on drums!) and two albums in one!. Usually it takes me time to get into something new, and I know that taking that time means that it will stay with me for a long time. Not so with Roland Kirk, I loved it straight off and I know I will keep hunting down the hard to find records for a long time to come.

Standout tracks include Mystical Dreams, the eponymous Rip Rig and Panic, Black Diamonds, Alfie (yes the Cilla Black number....) Silverisation and Now Please dont you cry Beautiful Edith. All different in their own way, but wonderful. Do yourself a favour and get into Rashaan's music and whenever someone asks you what your favourite Roland Kirk tune is just tell them - 'the one I'm listening to now', 'cos they are all knockouts.
