5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Debussy interpretations, 17 Mar 2001
By Mr G (Lisbon) - See all my reviews
Pascal Roge has always seemed to me the most subtle of pianists. He doesn't "shout" at the piano, instead suffusing the music with a beguilingly understated quality which ultimately makes for very moving listening.

His Debussy set for Decca is a fine example of this. Roge captures the essences of Debussy with great skill, whether wistful, playful or dramatic. His playing of the Preludes, Book One is quite lovely, displaying that persuasive yet unforced power which he brings to the French piano repetoire. He produces wonderful interpretations of Images, one of Debussy's most "impressionistic" piano works, and brings heaps of charm and introspection to Children's Corner. All in all, a superb set, played with great wit and feeling.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best 'Images' I've heard, 17 Jun 2005
Wonderful interpretations of these masterpieces of impressionism, especially the first set of 'Images' and the Preludes. Never too harsh with the colours, but never afraid to be bright and fresh either. The essential debussy solo interpretations.

1.0 out of 5 stars Is this in mono...?, 2 Jan 2009
By Scaffa (Sweden) - See all my reviews
This was a disappointment. And I'm not referring to the performance, of which I have not been able to form an opinion due to the poor sound quality. According to the booklet these are "ADRM = Analogue to Digital Remaster", and I have to say that the Decca remastering team has done a substandard job.

As pointed out by another reviewer, the volume is low so you have to crank it up, and when you do, you hear plenty of hiss.

The sound is rather muddled and dull. No sense of space.

But the biggest problem is that the stereo separation is extremely narrow. Indeed, at times it is non-existent, which gives the impression of listening to monaural recordings. Very strange since these analogue recordings very made in the 1970s.

This refers both to Rogé's Debussy Piano Works and to his Ravel Piano Works.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing......
I would agree with the last reviewer concerning the quality of the "digital remastering". There is a lot of hiss very noticeable in the quieter passages, which suggests that the... Read more
