Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Ullmann's opera has got to be one of the most terrifying and moving works in the history of the form. It was composed in 1943 in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, though never performed there. That the music survived at all is something of a miracle, as Ullmann himself was later taken to Auschwitz and gassed. The story is an allegory: the emperor (a thinly disguised parody of Hitler) decides to wage total war and so offends Death by seeming to take over his job that Death goes on strike and people everywhere stop dying. Death only agrees to go back to work when the emperor permits himself to be the first victim. Although only about three quarters of an hour long, the music makes a terrific impact and this gutsy performance pulls no punches. --David Hurwitz

5.0 out of 5 stars superb twentieth century opera little known, 10 Jul 2003
By Alan Rosenfelder (edgware, middlesex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This opera was composed in the most appalling of circumstances in the Terezin concentration camp in the 1940's.It is both musicaly and dramaticaly of the highest quality. The plot concerns death going on strike and was recognized as a thinly veiled attack on Nazism and hence never performed during the composer's life time. The music is very strident with a lot of musical in references some of which i am still trying to decipher, the most obvious being a grotesquely distorted national anthem. The libretto by Peter Kien is a gem with real poetic underpinning which can be read in the accompanying sleave notes. As a non musician i cannot fault the playing or singing on this c.d.which seems highly commited .Ullmann is a rarely performed composer who can write quite biting phrases and concise melodies which are accessible and well worth the effort of getting to know. This c.d.will not dissapoint, highly recommended.
