This recording was published in 1968 and surpassed the earlier 1958 recording in many ways. John Reed would not have performed the part of Major General Stanley at this point of his career, it was usually played by his understudy. Owen Brannigan (guesting for the company) is delicious in the part, in fact he was born to play it. The rest of the cast, including the late lamented Donald Adams, and Christene Palmer are superb as well as the strong chorus and the fine direction of Isidore Godfrey (known affectionately as Goddie). Philip Potter is quite outstanding in respect of his singing voice (dialogue a little precious) and is surely the finest G&S tenor since Derek Oldham in the 1920-30's. To purchase this recording, you cannot go wrong. The whole performance is possibly the finest ever recorded and with the bonus of the dialogue, a must! Revel and enjoy!
