Back in the 1960s, Benjamin Britten's recordings of his own music set new standards, not only for the quality of the performances, but also for that of the recordings. Take the Young Person's Guide: every solo instrument is naturally highlighted, but within an ambience that allows the full orchestra to make a real impact in the closing fugue.
