Britten's first great opera, written in 1945, remains a touchstone not only for postwar opera, but also anticipates the direction that postmodern music would take later in the century. Written at a time when high modernism was in full swing, Britten bucked the trends by taking a personal, political and musically eclectic approach. It's a small story with great ramifications: A sadistic fisherman and his violent actions turn him into the bane of his community, resulting in his suicide. Laden with emotion and passion, the tale is often said to reflect Britten's struggles with his own sexuality. The opera itself is a provocative stew of minimalism and romanticism, with small dashes of atonality thrown in; although consistently melodic, there's enough thorns in the mix to satisfy any lover of challenging music. Conducted by Britten, with the lead sung by the great tenor Peter Pears, there's never been a more definitive recording made. Although recorded in 1958, the snappy digital transfer makes this disc shine like it was recorded yesterday. --Kenneth Goldsmith
