Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Percy Grainger was one of music's true originals. Folk-song collector, bandmaster, composer of quirkily original orchestral and choral music, his works have yet to be fully appreciated--or even catalogued. The problem was that he liked to keep his performance options open, and generally produced several versions of the same piece, some of which were complete rewrites (and therefore new works), while others were modest rescorings. The choral music largely consists of folk tune and popular song arrangements that Grainger collected on his travels through the English and Irish countryside. You owe it to yourself to hear them; they are, one and all, delightful. --David Hurwitz

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond a country garden, 12 Jan 2009
By Bob Sherunkle (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This compilation is a mixture of well-known, or fairly well-known, Grainger songs, and items which are CD or world premieres. The highlight has to be the heartrendingly beautiful rendition of the Londonderry Air, followed very closely by Mo Nighean Dubh (which I gather translates to My Dark-Haired Maid). Both of these are a cappella, which is always a test of a choir's quality. The Londonderry Air is a wordless performance, which puts it at a useful distance from the usual "Danny Boy".

There is a wide variety of mood and style, from the sorrowful (Brigg Fair, Shallow Brown) to the boisterous (I'm seventeen come Sunday, Scotch Strathspey and Reel). At various points the choir assume the appropriate accent - Irish, Scottish or Mummerset (the last doesn't work quite so well).

The Scotch Strathspey and Reel is described by Grainger as "inlaid with several Irish and Scotch tunes and a sea-chanty". The last of is a case of "what shall we do with a [hilariously] drunken sailor?" Both this and Tribute to Foster (based around Camptown Races) are examples of Grainger's virtuosity in extended improvisation.

Two of the longer premiere items, Love Verses from the Song of Solomon and The Bride's Tragedy, are rather directionless. (Interestingly these are the only two pieces for which the sleeve notes don't identify Grainger borrowing from other sources.) Full marks, though, for experimentation - this isn't supposed to be "Grainger's 14 greatest choral hits"!

The Monteverdi Choir perform superbly, well supported by the "English Country Gardiner orchestra", presumably a pseudonym for Gardiner's usual ensembles, the English Baroque Soloists and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. Clearly, however, the whole project is led by Gardiner.

It is hard to imagine a better introduction to Grainger's choral works.

There are clear and extensive sleeve notes, including full lyrics.
