I was used to hearing faster and louder versions of these great late Beethoven Piano Sonatas, perhaps by Richter and Ashkenazy. But I am now much happier with Brendel's more balanced approach of quieter and slower passages in these late Sonatas matched with power and speed elsewhere. The slower and quiter parts of the movements in these sonatas are nothing but sublime, particularly in the last Sonata Opus 111.
I would recomend this set of CD's to all lovers of late Beethoven Piano Sonatas.

Beethoven's late piano sonatas are an interesting kettle of fish. Proper music lovers will be able to tell you why, I will just say that if you remember the show "Butterflies", then the piano bit that was played as incidental music turns up here.

I already had Kempf's renditions of the sonatas, but personally I prefer Brendel's. Kempf makes too many errors in comparison, and his tempo is less consistent. Brendel is spot on. I am not knocking Kempff (buy both if you can), but for the later sonatas, this is better.
