Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Popular as well as critical opinion increasingly seems to consider the 1976-80 phase of David Bowie's career as his creative peak. Leaving the excesses of glam rock behind him, he looked to the German new wave bands such as Kraftwerk, Can and Tangerine Dream and came up with a stripped-down, sombre music--as much a reflection of mind as a sign of the times. 1976's Low is the first full stage of this change in direction: it's a good album for Glass to re-work because the loose collection of vocal numbers and synthesiser pieces--Brian Eno's contribution at its radical best here--invites another's hand in the creative process. Glass doesn't radically rethink the nature of the album, but combines and rearranges the contents into a multi-movement work with a symphonic perspective, if not essence. It's not a replacement or improvement on the original, but a valid gloss from a contemporary (1993) perspective, and is admirably realised by Dennis Russell Davies and his Brooklyn forces. Don't miss out on Bowie's seminal album, but hear this too. --Richard Whitehouse

5.0 out of 5 stars Great interpretation!, 26 Jul 2001
The tracks on the album are not just classical versions of the songs from LOW but great intrepatation of the music written by David Bowie and Brian Eno for the groundbreaking album LOW (1977). We also must thank RYKO-DISC for putting 'Some are' as a bonus track on their CD release. The track was not on the original release of LOW but Philip Glass did used it in his syphony and I think it became the best part of this symphony.
