Product Description
Description
The sludge-based blues idioms that dominate Boss Hog's major-label debut can be traced back to the band's first releases on the Amphetamine Reptile label, and to the band-members'former/current projects like Pussy Galore, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Live Skull and The Swans. The back-bone of thisnow-solid quartet is Jon Spencer and Cristina Martinez, whose affected vocal interplay suggests that in each other they've found their true soulmates, both musically and matrimonially. Martinez's ferocious growls, sensual whispers and girl-group vocals play the perfect foil to Spencer's incomprehensible blues babble and smooth-talkin' R&B jive.
Their synergy is best felt on cuts like "Ski Bunny", "I Dig You" and the cover of Ike Turner's "I Idolize You", where Spencer's falsetto is backed by Martinez's best imitation of Martha Reeves' Vandellas. The band ventures into uncharted waters on the dissonant noise groove of "Punkture", evoking a Kim and Thurston-like dynamic, and on "Texas", a gentle waltz with orchestrated piano, cello and pizzicato violin buoying Martinez's urgent-yet-repressed vocals.
