5.0 out of 5 stars Pushing the boundaries of music, 24 Feb 2008
By Liam Devany "Atmospheric Mind" (london United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The concept behind this album was research ethnologists made in the 1940's studying tribal collective dreaming. Hassell uses this idea as a jumping off point to truly stretch the boundaries of music into what he calls "4th world music". The first couple of tracks are the most challenging but well worth staying with as the album progresses to an ethereal plateux where slight tribal vocal snatches are mixed with sublime water tablas to form a shimmering audio chimera. For me I am deep in the jungle on a Ayahausca experience every time i hear this album and only use it for special occasions so I can savour its uniqueness.

Hassell's treated trumpet transcends the boundaries of what we regard as conventional trumpet playing to form spirit vocals or quick otherworldly darting sounds. This album is his crowning glory and every bit as revolutionary in its playing style (although in a completely different audio dimension) as Miles Davis at his cutting best. If you are looking for music that goes well beyond ambient boundaries and creates its own world in your head - this will not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars mesmerising, 25 Mar 2001
By A Customer
this is one of those life changing albums, Hassell is the sublime trumpeter of his generation, almsot forgotten about but so true to his art that does he really care. This is an album which will have you transported to India, lying on the carpet, imagining your hand in a brook with jewelled elephants approaching. Not music, but a vision.
