1.0 out of 5 stars When is an album not an album?, 26 Jul 2004
By A Customer
Yet another bizarre attempt by EG records to produce a cd that supposedly includes tracks from earlier vinyl/tape versions. Like King Crimson's Discipline, which had a differing version of Matte Kudasi from the vinyl release, so here again do we get versions of the original. Here they go on step further and in the League of Gentlemen section of the album, omit the "vocal track" out of the final mix of these songs

I will be pleased to get the real cd versions, which are complete and unedited, should EG ever decide to release them. At this price of £12.99, if you can get past having 3 albums on one cd, you would at least expect to have the songs in their original forms. Alas, this is not the case. Buyer beware!!!!!! This is a really disappointing release, especially for those who are looking to replace their vinyl/tape versions of hard to come by songs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs Vocals, 24 Jan 2007
I agree with the first reviewer - if you ever heard the vinyl version, you would know and, like me, miss the vocal tracks - the female vocalist on Minor Man perfectly complemented Fripps guitar. Adding a David Byrne track does not compensate for what they took away. Very disappointing.
I will have to drag out the vinyl and get it into MP3 fashion somehow. . .

3.0 out of 5 stars Fripps along pleasantly enough, 14 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Not sure what the previous reviewer is referring to, in that the League of Gentlemen didn't have a 'vocal track' - or at any rate, they didn't have a singer. They were just a rather boring instrumental dance band, formed by Fripp to ease his way back into a band situation when he was starting to rev up towards the early 80s reformation of King Crimson. There's an interesting live album of the League issued by Fripp's DGM label, but "interesting" is not much of a recommendation as far as music goes. "Interesting" doesn't get the feet tapping and the hips shaking.

The best bit of this album is the first side. After we've got rid of the annoying Talking Heads pastiche (featuring David Byrne singing unsingable Fripp lyrics), the title track is an immense and volcanic solo by Fripp over an unassuming disco backing, kind of like 'Ascension'-era John Coltrane sitting in with Kool and the Gang. Fifteen minutes of some of the most extreme fuzz guitar ever recorded, and you can dance to it! What fun. In truth, though, this is far from the best work by anyone involved.
