Product Description

From Amazon.com
Kidjo takes further strides from African tradition to western soul-pop with the star-studded, 10-track Fifa. The diminutive diva from Benin with the big voice may offend some with her perceived "sellout," but she answers in turn that western pop is a worldwide phenomenon--and she is not afraid to assimilate it into her own music. With stars like Ray Lema and Jacob Desvarieux backing her up, Kidjo determinedly goes where she wants. Underneath the glossy beats of tracks like "Wombo Lombo," "Welcome," and "Koro Koro" lies a canny use of traditional structures and motifs. Kidjo can also handle pure African ballads like "Naima" (with guitar work from Carlos Santana), but her ability to marry music forms has hindered the efforts of the marketing folks, confused by an artist with feet so firmly planted on both sides of the aisle. --Derek Rath

5.0 out of 5 stars Ethnic diversity on a disc, 6 Mar 2002
By A Customer
The reasons why I enjoy this CD are manifold - the predominant reason though must be the emotive substance of the lyrics and their easy cohesion with the percussion of the music. 'Fifa' is tribal strength married with contemporary musical compositions and as a result you have a collection of songs which range from the upbeat 'Shango' to the sentimental, yet not sloppy 'Naima.' Angelique Kidjo chose to have musicians from her home country of Benin perform on this album and as a result the sound is not only rich and deep, but heartfelt - which is where the power of this music lies. This album is also not solely restricted to homeland material, most of the songs are concerned with themes which are universal in their appeal and their relativity .Although the majority of the songs are sung in Kidjo's native language, the lyric sheet is in both French and English - which is really refreshing and encourages you to contemplate the lyrics. I think the greatest thing about this collection of songs though is their diversity - it really is 'mood' music (and I don't mean in the insulting sense of the word!) It is one of those essential CDs that you keep in your collection and get out on the occasions when you want to relax to evocative music - and because it has upbeat tunes, it simply won't let allow you to become too contemplative. In short I really enjoy Kidjo's music for three significant reasons - she involves the listener in her music, the songs are powerful and they work well to both chill you out ('Naima' and 'Fifa') and to energise you ('Shango' and 'Sound of the Drums'.) I really recommend this CD for your collection - it is inspiration in musical form.
