Product Description

Description
Like reggae and other Caribbean musics in the '70s, variousforms of African pop entered the western musical consciousness in the early-to-mid-'80s. Like his fellow Nigerian Fela Kuti, Senegal's Youssou N'Dour, or the many South African artists who achieved a higher US/UK profile around this time, King Sunny Ade and his African Beats create music that is both comfortingly familiar and intriguingly exotic. The rhythms are not far from some Caribbean pop or from the New Orleans R&B of the '40s and '50s, and Ade's stripped-down, percussion-heavy music is also surprisingly melodically varied.
SYNCHRO SYSTEM, like its 1982 predecessor JUJU MUSIC, consists of edited versions of songs that had appeared on previousAfrican-only LPs. The album works beautifully as a sampler or as an introduction to Ade's intoxicating music. But real fans are advised to track down the longer, original releases, where the hypnotic rhythms work their fullest magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of percussive textures, 8 May 2004
By Pieter "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
On this excellent album, no less than 22 musicians assist the Nigerian superstar. Percussion plays a central role in juju music and here, the vast array of instruments include talking drums, agogo, shekere, motimo, maracas, guitars, keyboards and congos.

The album opens with Synchro Feelings, a mellow piece with a skittering beat and layered choruses and is followed by Mo Ti Mo which has impressive instrumental and tempo variation. The tuneful Maajo is one of my favorites because of its strong melody and the lovely call and response vocals.

The title track Synchro System is a lengthy number with soulful lead vocals whilst E Saiye Re has an insistent dance rhythm and delicious infusions of Hawaiian guitar. This guitar is even more pronounced on Tolongo, a simple but catchy song and on the spacey E Wele that is also embellished with impressive keyboards. The album concludes with Synchro Reprise, a type of dub version of the title track that is also perfect for the dancefloor.

With its delicate percussive textures, engaging vocals and the skilful playing of the musicians, the album creates a tapestry of joyful moods. Perhaps not as immediate as his masterpiece Juju Music, this is also a great album that will reward the listener with repeated plays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, 3 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This is THE Juju classic. Cool beats and a sweetness of talking drums and Hawaian guitar the music hangs below the surface while Sunny Ade's vocal warmth glides seemlessly over. The beauty of the album is the mix of many Yoruba traditional drum musics with steel guitar and synth's. Eclectic meets electric.
