Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Independence Day composer has gathered a batch of marquee singers--Chrissie Hynde, Jarvis Cocker and Iggy Pop included--to salute the Bond mystique. These songs are imbedded in the collective unconscious and the over-the-top arrangements on the Aimee Mann-sung "Nobody Does It Better" and Martin Fry's "Thunderball" are a treat. Better yet are the electronic, club-ready tracks by Leftfield and Propellerheads (doing "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"). --Jeff Bateman

3.0 out of 5 stars Gets better with each play., 28 Jun 2000

Being a fan of the classic versions of these songs this came as a bit of a surprise. Wasn't too sure if I like it at first. Track 6 (James Bond Theme) is nothing like the original, thought it was rather non-descript. Liked tracks 3 and 10 initially and began to like the others on hearing them over again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 7 Oct 2002

(REAL NAME)
I was looking forward to hearing this album after being blasted away and totally won over by DA's Independence Day. However, I have tried to listen to this album several times now and I'm still disappointed. It's rather too gimmicky for my liking - I'm a traditionalist I suppose brought up on Barry's soaring horns, melting strings and haunting melodies.
None of these tracks come anywhere near the originals. David McAlmont's attempt at Diamonds are Forever would be fine, but his weird conditioning of the top notes ruins it. The electronic effects on Nobody Does It Better is totally unnecessary. I actually had to jump onto the next track during Space March as it is so monotonous! I'm sorry, but track four - All Time High, featuring Pulp in whispering tones is a nightmare. The start of Moonraker is very promising, as it actually sounds very much like the original. Shara Nelson's rendition is actually acceptable. Track six - The James Bond Theme, well it's got to be there somewhere if you can be bothered to wait for it! The Live and Let Die, Thunderball, and From Russia with Love tracks seem to work okay, even though there are some strange effects included. Track 10's intro plays havoc with your balance - I'm sorry David, but channel switching does nothing for me. The trumpets on this track as in others, seem to revel in splitting their top notes!! And finally to Iggy Pop's version of We have all the time. All I can say is - absolutely average.
Well, I'm sorry I can't be more positive, but I think if DA tries something like this again, his experiment could be adopted by some evil villain who could hold the world to ransom by threatening to play this music in lifts and shopping malls!!

4.0 out of 5 stars intriguing..., 10 Jun 2003
By A Customer
David Arnold's compilation of classic Bond tunes covered by contemporary artists is an eclectic mix. Released as he was taking over the reigns as composer on the more recent Bond movies it promises, in my opinion, more than he has delivered in his scores on the last few pictures.
this album remains a uniquely entertaining examination of Bond culture interpreted by a composer who, like many of us, grew up with the James Bond films. The music strays just far enough from the originals to be fresh and although it may take some time to come to terms with the changes, ultimately it is rewarding in its entirety.
This album, though perhaps not to the tastes of the Bond purist, covers a wide selection of scores, and largely succeeds in providing a rare retrospective glimpse of some of the most iconic scores in movie history through 21st century tinted goggles.
