4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible playing, but not for the general listener, 7 April 2006

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Nyiregyhazi had a very bumpy career, beginning as a child prodigy around World War 1, then ignored for five decades, before being rediscovered in the late 70's. This CD was made at that time, but it can barely contain the huge sound he produces in big passages. The piano is not the best either, suffering from his tendency to force the tone a little above forte. His transcriptions are obviously based on those of Liszt, but are very original.

In view if the recorded quality and his slightly eccentric interpretations, I would recommend this only to those interested in the 'grand tradition' that goes back to Liszt himself, a very subjective manner of playing that is now rather unfashionable, but nonetheless fascinating.
