Although punk originators the Stooges only released three albums during their brief tenure, numerous compilations of demos and live material have surfaced since that band's early-'70s breakup. 1997's CALIFORNIA BLEEDING contains nine tracks recorded live during the band's tour in support of RAW POWER, from three different performances (a pair of 1973 shows at L.A.'s Whisky and a 1974 San Francisco show).
While METALLIC 2xKO probably remains the definitive live recording of this Stooges era, CALIFORNIA BLEEDING contains several highlights. Though the sound quality could be better, you can'tgo wrong with the vicious readings of such classics as "Search & Destroy", "I Need Somebody", "Johanna", and the turbo-charged "She Creatures of the Hollywood Hills". Also included are detailed and informative liner notes and prime in-action photos.

'California Bleeding' brings us die hards three(3) live concert segments. Two are from a five-night stay the Stooges played at the Whiskey A-Go-Go in September,1973 (these tracks are NOT the same as those released on the French label Revenge, titled The Stooges-'Live At The Wiskey'. The show on that disc was from Sept. 16th, the performances on this disc are from the 15th and 19th). The third segment is from Bimbo's, San Francisco, January 1974. Recording quality is variable, but perfectly acceptable for this type of release. I personally was impressed with "I Need Somebody", "Open Up And Bleed", the rarely played "Johanna" and performance art like "She Creatures Of The Hollywood Hills". Keyboardist Scott Thurston plays some pretty mean harmonica here and there. Make no mistake, this is raw. This is very nasty nasty rock n' roll made by some very intense guys. It's live, and it's desperate and captures the Stooges at their most ferocious, seat of the pants best. "Take it easy brother, take it easy brother.." Buy this cd only if you wanna get down n' dirty with the Igster.. if not..check out the slick new remix of Raw Power. That rocks, but CA Bleeding is truly RAW. Cut down to the bone.
